This modern house is located in the densely populated area of Blackpool on Waiheke Island, New Zealand. Designed by Glamuzina Paterson Architects, it has a monolithic, geometrically clear form. The aim was to build a beautiful hillside house nestled under a dense tree canopy and closely connected to the natural contours of the land.
An Idyllic House On A Slope
The house adapts to the terrain and uses metal and wood as its main materials. Black aluminum window systems and metal cladding give the building a contemporary look. The entrance is shaded by trees and faces the steep hill, with a porch leading to a winding path and wooden bridges following the contour lines.
A Modern Hillside House With Metal Facades
The projecting floor is partly embedded into the slope, and the south wall acts as a protective structure that helps anchor the building. This creates a strong relationship between Blackpool House and its surroundings.
Generous glass helps connect inside and outside, giving the house visual lightness despite its substantial metal exterior. The living room is spacious, and double-height ceilings strengthen the sense of openness while the layout still preserves privacy.
Built on a tight budget, the house uses recycled totara wood on walls, floors, and ceilings. The dining room and kitchen are on the lower level and open to the landscape through a large sliding glass door. Upstairs are the master bedroom, bathroom, mezzanine library, and a comfortable seating area.
