These floating mini-gardens were created by French designer Benjamin Graindorge as a natural filter system for aquariums. The idea is inspired by plants that purify water. The whole structure is designed as a natural filtration system, reducing the need for water changes while saving energy.
Benjamin Graindorge’s floating mini-garden as a natural filtration system

The floating mini-garden was created by Benjamin Graindorge in collaboration with Duende Studio. The garden combines several water-purifying plant species with a sand bed. The filter garden works on the principles of hydroponics and recycling, helping keep aquarium maintenance to a minimum. All you need to do is occasionally clean the aquarium glass with a sponge and feed the fish regularly.
Floating mini-garden – filtration technology

The mini-garden by Benjamin Graindorge is based on two simple principles that keep the cleaning process running smoothly. The first technique uses a sand bed: a 5 cm layer of sand filters the aquarium water. Small particles in the water create a useful environment for friendly bacteria, which convert nitrogen into nitrates. The second technique is based on an aquaponic system. Nitrate-rich water passes down through the sand to the plant roots, which absorb the nitrates as nutrients. The remaining water is cleaner and flows back into the aquarium.
