This small house in Nagoya, Japan, creates a unique living experience. The architects set out to combine a modern home with a garden-like interior. Built on a small plot and surrounded by neighboring houses, the project had to provide enough usable space while preserving a sense of openness. The designers did more than that: they built a real garden inside the house. Rooms and a garden inside the house complete one another. The beautiful garden surrounds the hall on the first floor, with only a thin layer of glass separating the two spaces. The bathroom is located behind the garden and is also divided from it by a glass wall. The whole room has a calm, comfortable atmosphere.

A staircase leads from the garden to the second floor of the building. A window above the stairs brings natural light down from the attic level. The garden house is lit from above. Compact windows allow enough daylight into the home, while the living areas appear darker than the bright garden.

Interior Design – A Home in Japan

The upper level consists of a large living room. It offers plenty of comfortable seating, while rectangular openings frame views of the garden. Each doorway has a view toward the plants. The interior design is minimalist and simple. Most elements of the garden house are painted white, contributing to a modern and spacious look. The white surfaces also provide the perfect setting for the green plants in the garden.
