This private family house shows how neglected "left-over" spaces in the city can be used successfully. In this case, a tiny caretaker’s cottage on a three-meter-wide frontage was extended and transformed into a modern home for a family with two children. At the narrow facade of the old house, a new study window opens the home to the street in an engaging way.

A covered staircase leads to the second floor and becomes part of the house’s enclosed circulation. A small library also serves as a bridge connecting the kitchen and living room. Beyond it are the bedrooms and stairs to the roof terrace. The project keeps the existing small cottage, opening it up to accommodate the dining area. For privacy, a series of perforated iron screens filter sunlight and block unwanted views from neighboring houses.
