A sunny room with large exterior windows has many names: sunroom, glazed terrace, glass extension, and conservatory. A typical winter garden or conservatory has three walls and a roof made of glass or another transparent material, so it can even become a living area. Conservatories were popular in large homes of the English aristocracy in the 19th century. Today, the conservatory is a modern extension of the living space and can be used all year round with proper heating.

Winter gardens were originally designed for plants from warm climates, such as citrus trees, so they could grow in colder regions. They were also often places where exotic items collected during travels, such as rare insects or bird cages, were displayed.

The good news is that you can build a small conservatory without owning a large Victorian house. You can easily borrow the look of these exclusive residential conservatories, especially if you already have a room with plenty of natural light. All you need are a few plants, ideally palms, some summery rattan furniture, and perhaps a rug for extra comfort.
