Protect the garden fence wood from rain
Even during construction, a wooden fence should be protected from the weather. If the fence posts are set in concrete or anchored in protective sleeves in the ground, the wooden fence is effectively protected against rot. Rainwater should also be able to drain away easily; manufacturers often shape the slats with this in mind, so check this detail before buying. If the fence is built correctly, half the work is already done. The next step is a protective sealant.
Maintain the wooden garden fence
If the wooden fence in the garden is poorly maintained, it will not last long. Treat the boards and vulnerable joints with a water-repellent product. This protects the material from natural decay, although the color of the wood will still change over time, mainly because of UV radiation. Some people like a pale gray patina, but if you do not, choose an impregnation with UV protection. Here is how to apply it:
First sand the fence, then apply the special impregnation. Let the fence dry for two to three days. After that, you can apply paint or a glaze. The difference is simple: paint covers the wood with color, while a transparent glaze emphasizes its natural beauty.
Another option is tung oil. In this case, you do not have to sand the fence first. The oil may slightly change the color of the wood.
If the wood color has already changed, you can buy a so-called wood bleach. It is applied like a polish and brightens the wood.
