Bright yellow and asymmetrical – this is what a modern holiday home complex can look like in South Korea. Korean studio KOOSSINO designed the Moai Pension for visitors traveling to a botanical garden outside Seoul. The sunny yellow buildings lift the mood of their guests and also become an attraction for passers-by.
Asymmetrical holiday houses on a sunny hillside

The rental units stand on a gently sloping site in Gapyeong, about an hour and a half from Seoul. The architects were influenced by the monumental Moai statues of Easter Island and named the holiday-home complex after them. Like the giant stone figures, the houses have a strong, top-heavy volume. Concrete bases and faceted upper stories line up along the slope, all facing in the same direction to create a stretched horizontal composition.

Each house is clad on the upper floor with bright yellow panels. The green landscape and rich yellow buildings create a striking play of color and spark curiosity about the resort. The same color appears inside, where stairs, doors, and furniture glow in yellow and stand out against simple white walls and gray surfaces. Each unit has a kitchen on the ground floor with access to a small terrace and pool, while the bedroom and bathroom are upstairs. Small balconies and roof terraces let guests enjoy the surrounding scenery.

Studio KOOSSINO also developed a single-story structure at the bottom of the slope, where the reception, cafe, bar, and a roof terrace with a swimming pool are located. The Moai Pension offers a bright and unusual holiday destination in the hills near Seoul.
