Bungalows are familiar enough, but modern cabins on wheels still feel surprising. Rolling Huts, designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig in Mazama, Washington, offer compact lodging with mountain views. Conceived as a low-tech, low-impact alternative to camping, the six huts sit lightly on the site and reduce their impact on the meadow around them.
Modern Cabins on Wheels with Simple Amenities

Olson Kundig’s design balances architecture with the surrounding landscape. The Rolling Huts are grouped like a herd on a former RV site in Washington’s Methow Valley. Each hut is an offset, steel-clad box on a steel-and-wood platform, lifted on wheels so native grasses can grow underneath and the mountain views stay open.
Modern Cabins on Wheels Reduce Their Impact on the Landscape

Modern cabins like the Rolling Huts impress with simple construction and a distinctive roof form that looks light from the outside. Clerestory windows below the roof make it seem as if the roof is floating above the cabin.

The cabins almost blend into the landscape. Inside, the design is minimalist, simple, and functional. Each hut has a small living area with a compact kitchen setup and a fireplace; guests also have access to a refrigerator, microwave, and Wi-Fi.
An environmentally friendly alternative to camping tourism

The towns of Twisp, Winthrop, and Mazama are popular year-round destinations for climbers, hikers, cyclists, skiers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. The Methow Valley offers spectacular scenery and one of the world’s longest cross-country ski trail systems, about 193 km. Visitors can also enjoy mountain biking, rafting, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities.
