To construct this monolithic structure, Mumbai-based SPASM Design Architects combined local basalt with concrete. Khopoli House, a modern minimalist second home, is built on a steep slope in Maharashtra, India. Despite its rigorous geometry, the concrete house settles naturally into the hilly landscape.

From a distance, the concrete house appears to sit close to the edge of the slope. The design is characterized by dark basalt, a local stone found throughout the region, which makes the building feel like a visual extension of the rocky site.

The use of concrete at Khopoli House was shaped by the site’s climate: high summer temperatures and heavy monsoon rains are typical of this part of Maharashtra. The robust structure was designed to withstand those conditions. Natural stone also appears throughout the interior, including on floors and walls.

The entrance sits beneath a cantilevered concrete canopy, creating a protected outdoor area with comfortable seating. Dark stone surfaces give the approach a cool, sheltered feeling, while a large terrace with a swimming pool opens to sweeping views.

The living and dining areas occupy the space between the two wings. Blinds can be adjusted for separation and privacy. The house covers 638 square meters and offers a comfortable, open-plan living area.
