Over the last ten or twenty years, Japanese garden design has gained popularity in the Western world. The reason may be our fast-paced lifestyle and the desire for a garden that requires relatively little maintenance. It may also be a fascination with a garden style that is very different in structure and appearance. The most likely reason for this increased interest is the Japanese garden's inherent atmosphere of harmony and tranquility.

The origin and history of Japanese gardens is fascinating, but too complex to describe in detail here. In short, traditional Japanese gardens often grew from religious beliefs and the desire to create balance in life. Each Japanese garden can serve a different purpose, from the tea ceremony to entertainment and aesthetic pleasure. The "Zen" garden, however, was created specifically to encourage contemplation and meditation. It is perhaps one of the most tranquil Japanese garden styles. An interesting feature of the Zen garden, or "rock garden," is that the element of water can be represented by white sand.

In principle, Japanese gardens present idealized landscapes in miniature. The design is often abstract or highly stylized. Many Japanese gardens include water in some form, perhaps as a pond or stream, or, as in the Zen garden, symbolized by white sand. Water balances stone, so the two elements are placed together with care. Stones or rocks may even stand in water to represent sacred islands, a motif found in some East Asian traditions.

In the West, it is not necessary to understand every layer of symbolism in a traditional Japanese garden in order to enjoy its unique style and calm atmosphere. Still, it is natural to be curious about the origins of such a deeply spiritual garden art.
