10/12/2013 – In Sölden, Tyrol, ice Q is a gourmet restaurant at 3,048 meters on the Gaislachkogl summit. Designed by Obermoser, it brings together high-alpine architecture, wine and cuisine in a glass volume set directly above the ski area.
The restaurant is reached by the Gaislachkogl gondola. A suspension bridge links it with the nearby summit platform, while the generous terraces and roof deck open wide views across the mountains and glaciers.
The building reads like a sculpture of stacked ice cubes. Its transparent facades, deep overhangs and panoramic decks make it both a landmark and a place to pause, look out and experience the high-altitude landscape.
Construction at more than 3,000 meters had to respond to difficult ground conditions and extreme temperatures. The foundations were designed so the structure could adjust to thermal movement; a similar principle was used for the gondola mountain station.
Inside, the atmosphere is restrained and warm. Natural materials from the region, including stone and solid wood, are used for walls, floors and ceilings, giving the restaurant a calm counterpoint to the exposed alpine setting.
