1 Excavation. Dig a hole slightly wider than the mortar tub so that its edge will sit flush with the ground surface. Level the bottom of the hole and add a layer of sand or gravel if necessary.
2 Place the mortar tub in the hole. Set the mortar tub into the hole and fill the gap around it with sand, gravel or excavated soil to ensure that the tub sits securely.
3 Planting. Fill the mortar tub with water and let it sit for several days before adding a water lily, a small lotus, three to five small potted plants, and floating aquatic plants. You can hide the edge of the tub with flat stones so it blends naturally into the surroundings.
