
Designer Mauricio Affonso explored loofah as a versatile natural material and developed a range of innovative applications. His Luffa Lab project includes acoustic panels, low-cost splints, filters, and protective packaging, all based on the light, absorbent structure of the loofah plant.
Innovative Acoustic Products Made From Loofah

Affonso, a Brazilian-born designer based in London, worked with growers and craftspeople in Bonfim, Minas Gerais, to learn more about the origin, cultivation, and traditional uses of loofah. The plant belongs to the same family as cucumbers, pumpkins, and courgettes. When fully dried, its fibrous interior is commonly used as a bath sponge, but the material is also highly absorbent, lightweight, and naturally antimicrobial.

Loofah fibers form a complex cellulose network similar to an open-cell foam. That structure makes the material strong, light, breathable, and suitable for acoustic insulation.

These properties make loofah useful for packaging, filters, splints, and sound-absorbing panels. Low-cost hand and leg splints can be made by stretching wet loofah fibers and pressing them into a mold, offering a lightweight and biodegradable alternative for places with limited access to medical supplies.

Loofah can also absorb dye waste from denim production. Once dyed in indigo tones, the material can be molded into decorative acoustic wall tiles for homes, offices, and commercial interiors.
