Sendai Crystal is a sculptural bookshelf by architect Toyo Ito for the Italian furniture brand Horm. Inspired by Ito’s Sendai Mediatheque in Japan, the design combines architectural lightness with furniture-making precision. Made with glass shelves and solid alder and walnut supports, the designer bookshelf balances movement and calm, flexibility and strength.
A Shelf Design for Many Interiors

The transparent version looks lighter and more open thanks to its six glass shelves. The designer shelving system has a clear visual rhythm, with wooden supports that recall slender bamboo stems rising upward. The alder and walnut elements are positioned at different angles, creating an organic texture and a sense of movement.

Toyo Ito received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2013, and his design philosophy is reflected in the light, dynamic structure of this bookshelf. Sendai Crystal captures the spirit of the Sendai Mediatheque, translating architectural ideas into a functional storage piece for the home.
