
CHANG Architects designed Namly House, a modern concrete home in Singapore. The house uses a cascading water feature that collects rainwater and helps cool the interior naturally, turning a functional element into a dramatic architectural focus.

The owners wanted to bring three generations under one roof without sacrificing privacy. The house responds with a layered concrete structure, generous terraces and carefully arranged rooms that create both shared and separate spaces. White interior walls and furniture contrast strongly with the gray concrete, while the tropical landscape softens the raw material palette.
Modern house with natural cooling

The project is a new interpretation of the tropical house, shaped by the residents’ needs and by Singapore’s climate. Entry is a procession through a vestibule toward the cascading water feature. The water cools the air, creates a green oasis and forms the center of the home, while bedrooms and utility spaces are arranged around this communal spine. The reinforced concrete walls provide thermal mass, helping the interior remain cooler during the afternoon heat. Daylight is carefully managed so the rooms feel bright without losing their sense of shelter.

The landscape is integral to the architecture and complements the exposed concrete. Planting is used for shade, visual accents, spatial definition and sensory detail, with species such as coral trees, ferns, dracaena, schefflera, pandan, eucalyptus and edible plants. A rain-harvesting system supports the planted areas.
