Design

Daan Roosegaarde designed an interactive cycle path in the Netherlands inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s "Starry Night". The 600-meter-long path extends through the Eindhoven region, where the artist lived from 1883 to 1885. The cycle path consists of thousands of small stones that sparkle impressively at night. Designed by Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans, it was developed as part of a regional collaboration.

The luminous stones are charged by sunlight during the day and emit light at night. They form different patterns on the track, which become more visible in the dark. Tradition and innovation come together in this modern interpretation of Vincent van Gogh’s famous work. The Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bike path uses light-emitting technology from the Smart Highway concept, another joint project by Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans. The final design of the bike path was expected to be announced in 2014.
