Designing a garden is often a challenge, especially when there is never enough room for everything. A few basics should be planned in advance so the garden can meet different needs. We have put together a short list of design elements that make it easier to create a calm oasis in a small garden.
Garden design – 1. Build privacy

Privacy from neighboring gardens is essential, especially if your plot is exposed. There are many options: a hedge around the garden, a pergola planted with vines, or screening mats. Clematis, ivy, grapevines and bamboo mats are especially suitable.
Garden design – 2. Leave enough room for paths

Even if the areas are not large, you should create enough circulation space. Keep the path from the entrance to the gazebo, barbecue area, raised beds and garden shed open. Use stepping stones, traditional pavers or gravel.
3. Water supply and electrical connection

Water can be supplied in several ways: a well, a water connection, rain barrels, a garden pond or even a swimming pool. Rainwater is soft and low in calcium, making it very suitable for plants. Small ponds are decorative, but they often need to be topped up. Today a garden should also have an electrical connection to provide sufficient lighting. Electricity is also useful for tools such as electric lawn mowers and other outdoor appliances.
4. Ornamental plants and vegetables

You can use the garden not only as a place to relax, but also to grow fruit and vegetables yourself. Choose plants that are easy to care for, since many city garden owners can only tend their gardens on weekends. Salad greens, sprouts, herbs and flowering ornamentals are ideal.
