The unconventional children’s playground at the National Arboretum Canberra was designed by the award-winning landscape architecture practice Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL). The nature-themed play space invites children into wild adventures among the trees.
Playground Strengthens the Bond Between Children and Nature
The playground is located in Canberra, Australia’s capital, and offers children a beautifully designed environment for play. A good playground helps children develop, gain confidence, and gather strength for the future. TCL created a safe place for play and for building skills such as creativity, independence, and social interaction. Floating play pods, inspired by seeds and tree forms, delight children and adults alike. The team was inspired by the Arboretum’s forests of rare, threatened, and symbolic tree species. With this project, TCL set a high standard for park planning and playground design.
Unconventional Play Area in Australia Invites Hours of Fun
The Pod Playground is a family destination with activities and entertainment for children of many ages. The playground includes large-scale play equipment: imaginative cubbies, tunnels, slides, climbing structures, ladders, rope tunnels, climbing walls, wind chimes, kaleidoscopes, and other sensory elements. The surrounding site also offers carefully maintained gardens, picnic areas, and a visitor center.
TCL Created a World of Imaginative Play
The playground was designed to support children’s creativity while strengthening their connection with nature and native species. The playground was developed by Taylor Cullity Lethlean with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer. The architects chose play structures in natural autumn colors that blend with the landscape, and the systems meet strict safety requirements.
