Modern Hacienda Bacoc was completed in 2009 by Reyes Rios + Larrain Arquitectos, a studio based in Merida, Mexico. The modern flat-roofed building and its water features integrate the remains of an old natural-stone sisal hacienda, built around 1880-1910 in Seye, on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Many colonial haciendas and former Yucatan villas have been converted into residences and luxury hotels. Here, tradition and modernity come together beautifully to create a unique living environment.
Restored colonial building as a modern residence

The modern residence extends over 429 m2 and offers a contemporary interpretation of colonial construction. In this restoration project, Reyes Rios + Larrain Arquitectos favored traditional building techniques. The authentic colonial character is conveyed through open volumes, carefully chosen finishes, and a neutral color palette.
Modern residence with generous outdoor concrete areas

The facade is covered with a thick layer of plaster made with resin from the endemic chukum tree. Its neutral color recalls the original atmosphere of the colonial era. The solid concrete foundation walls were made with red "cancab" earth from the southern part of the peninsula as an aggregate.
Spacious modern house with a flat roof and clear geometry

This sprawling estate preserves the spirit of old Yucatan haciendas inside. The new volumes contain spacious rooms, high ceilings, and generous facade openings. Water features and large landscaped gardens complete the outdoor areas. The modern rustic ranch is devoted to organic farming and beekeeping.
