Located in the middle of the Netherlands, in the De Wieden nature reserve, the small village of Giethoorn was founded in 1230 by a group of settlers. Its name is linked to goats, reflected in the Dutch word geit. The village, with only a few thousand residents, has a unique look shaped by peat extraction in the region. Residents dug peat from the ground, and the holes quickly filled with water. To move peat from one place to another, people had to navigate through canals and ditches. What began as a necessity later became a popular tourist destination for spring break and sightseeing.

Giethoorn became popular after 1958, when the well-known Dutch director Bert Haanstra made a film there. Tourists began to visit the town and called it the Venice of the Netherlands.
