Stone, wood and glass characterize a modern home in California

This modern house with breathtaking ocean views was designed by Carver + Schicketanz in Big Sur, California. Although the site is large, local restrictions limited the buildable area near an existing access road. The architects also had to protect privacy and organize service infrastructure, including water storage and utilities, underground.

A Modern House in Stone, Glass, and Wood

The clients were a family with two young girls who used the house as a vacation retreat. The layout includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious living area with an open kitchen, and broad views. The architects aimed to merge the design as closely as possible with the surrounding landscape.

A Modern House With a Green Roof

Built into a slope, the house places service areas such as the garage, utility rooms, bathroom, and storage on the lower level. The green roof and surrounding grass help the building blend into the hillside and preserve views for uphill neighbors. Stone, wood, and glass give the home a warm yet contemporary character.
