In Kona, this modern residence, was completed in 2010 with a single level and expansive terraces. Located among cooled lava flows in Kona, Hawaii, the private home is surrounded by lush vegetation.
Modern residence clad in wood and stone

Designed by Belzberg Architects, this unique residence has an ultra-modern, rigorous geometry and a strong linear presence. The plan is positioned to make the most of views toward the surrounding landscape and the ocean horizon. Modern residence is composed of two open-plan volumes separated by a central exterior gallery. These include several viewing decks and swimming pools. At the entrance, visitors are welcomed by an unusual sculptural form made from recycled teak. The wooden structure has an almost sculptural quality and refers to traditional Hawaiian basket-weaving.
Residence with an ecological house concept

The modern residence was designed by Belzberg Architects with a strong focus on sustainability and respect for the environment. Reclaimed teak from old barns and train tracks was used in the exterior cladding. Two separate arrays of photovoltaic panels are mounted on the roof to offset energy use. Dark lava stone helps heat the pool water through solar radiation, while rainwater is collected, directed to drywells and returned to the aquifer.
Mood lighting in the hallway

From the residence, there are breathtaking views of the volcanic mountains. Inside and out, the building is shaped by the contrast between natural materials and precise geometric architecture.
American living pavilion with spectacular design

The rooms are open and spacious, with direct access to the terraces. The program includes a media room, several bedrooms and a loft-style main living area. Overall, the modern residence offers about 7800 square feet of comfortable contemporary living space.
Stacked and cut lava stone completes the accent facade

The modern residence received several awards, including Interior Design’s Best of Year 2010 award for residential design, a Hanley Wood Builder’s Choice/Custom Home honor award, and first place in the 2011 CTI Design Competition.
