The furniture collection by eccentric young designer Tuomas Tolvanen Markunpoika floats on the border between design and art. His grandmother's Alzheimer's disease, which gradually seemed to erode her identity, inspired the work. The designer translated those emotions into furniture. The idea may sound unusual, but the result is both compelling and moving.
Furniture shaped by metal rings and memory
The furniture range consists of 12 design pieces, including cabinets, chairs and chandeliers. The temporary nature and fragility of life are reflected in these works. For the series, the designer chose old wooden chairs and chests, painted them white and carefully wrapped them in a grid of metal rings. He then burned away the wood, leaving gaps in the metal frame. The result is a group of sculptural objects with great emotional value for the designer, visualizing deeply philosophical ideas.
Furniture design as a symbol of the passage of time
Tuomas Tolvanen Markunpoika graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. In his search for innovative design solutions, the artist explored philosophical questions. His graduation project, the art furniture series "Engineering Temporality," forms a bridge between the metaphysical and the material world and drew attention at the Design of the Year Award, where it was nominated in the "Interior Furniture" category. The unusual furniture cannot really be used, but it is strikingly beautiful.
