A strict definition of a design hotel is difficult to pin down, so let's look at one of its pioneers. Ian Schrager, the 61-year-old New York native, is widely regarded as a pioneer in the field. In his view, a design hotel is something that breaks with the norm and is visually provocative.
Ian Schrager is an entrepreneur, developer and designer. He first made his name with Studio 54 in New York. For more than 30 years, Schrager has cast a long shadow over the global hospitality industry. He became known for the concept of the "boutique hotel", which he explored successfully with the opening of Morgans Hotel in 1984.
Later, he raised the bar with the Delano Hotel in Miami and the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood, two proto-"resorts" that integrated spectacular high design. In 2005, after leaving the Morgans Hotel Group, Schrager founded Ian Schrager Company. Design projects such as 40 Bond by Herzog & de Meuron and the renovation of the Gramercy Park Hotel, a collaboration between Schrager and artist Julian Schnabel, set a very high standard for successors.
