The Art Nouveau style began to emerge around 1890. Its ornaments and intelligent natural patterns had a strong influence on furniture and decoration. What are the main features of Art Nouveau, and what gives it such great charm? We explain below.
Art Nouveau features – furniture, decoration and ornaments
Today, Art Nouveau is often confused with Art Deco. Although the two may seem similar at first glance, there are important differences. Art Nouveau had already lost popularity by the Second World War, while Art Deco became especially fashionable in the early 1940s. The two styles also differ in concept: Art Deco focuses on luxurious fabrics and quality materials, while Art Nouveau is inspired by nature, with abundant use of wood in the interior.
Perhaps the most important features of Art Nouveau are strongly curved lines and floral ornaments. Curved stair railings interpret the natural forms of plants. Sparkling dragonflies, butterflies and birds are integrated into cabinet designs as delicate motifs. Hand-painted wallpaper and fabric cover the walls, while solid wood furniture with exquisite carvings creates a natural look. Curved wrought iron decorates the room. Stained-glass windows and lighting complete the picture.
Art Nouveau features – colors
Characteristic colors of Art Nouveau interiors are sober and soft: pastel shades such as mustard yellow, olive, brown, purple, cream and sage green relax the senses and highlight floral ornaments. Bright colors such as peacock blue or gold can be used as accents. A characteristic of Art Nouveau is polished wood, whether on the floor, in furniture or as wall decoration. The natural material is highly polished and brilliant.
