Today, the rickshaw remains a common means of transport for millions of people in Asia and South America. Choosing a rickshaw instead of a car can also bring an appealing, slightly exotic note to sightseeing. In large cities especially, this three-wheeled alternative lets tourists explore landmarks and hidden corners in a more memorable way. With that global fascination in mind, Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue imagined a high-tech version of the rickshaw. His modern three-wheeled rickshaw, "Eclipse," takes its visual cues from bicycle spokes.
Modern rickshaw inspired by a carriage
The structural frame is made of aluminum and covered with a woven recyclable-polyethylene shell. Its rounded form recalls a fairy-tale carriage, while the wheels are partly covered with insulated acrylic fabric. The handlebars, headrests and seats have the feel of leather, but they are made from a hand-stitched weatherproof alternative. The modern rickshaw "Eclipse" stands apart from traditional rickshaws through unexpected luxuries: an iPhone docking station, speakers, cup holders, a cooling fan and privacy panels on both sides. Cobonpue was named Maison & Objet Asia Designer of the Year in 2014.
