Creating a mini pond: which containers are suitable?
If you do not have a garden and miss that feeling, it is possible to create a small paradise with sparkling water and lush aquatic vegetation on your balcony with little effort and money. You just need to create a mini pond. All you need are traditional wooden buckets and old basins or vessels that may be forgotten somewhere in the cellar. Now you can use them again and turn them into small ponds for the balcony. Colorful ceramic pots can serve the same purpose if their drainage holes are properly sealed.
Creating a mini pond: select aquatic plants
The other important part of your refreshing balcony corner is, without a doubt, aquatic vegetation. All kinds of buttercups can look very impressive, including common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), meadow buttercup (Ranunculus acris), marsh marigold (Caltha palustris), lesser celandine (Ficaria verna) and globe flower (Trollius europaeus). Elegant irises should be planted at different water depths. If the pond is small, however, low-growing reeds and water mint are preferable. Different types of lilies can also grow if the pond is not too shallow; the water level should be at least 40 cm. Many tropical plants, such as water hyacinth and Salvinia (floating fern), also grow well in warm water. Of course, you must also consider underwater vegetation. Creating a mini pond on the balcony: choose the place
Of course, you should also take care of your small balcony pond. A position in sun or partial shade is preferred. Avoid excessive growth of aquatic plants, which can block the water surface. Plant them not directly in the soil, but in special baskets. Do not forget that each plant needs a certain depth to thrive. To ensure the correct depth, you can use large and small stones. Algae, leaves and oversized plants should be removed regularly. Because water constantly evaporates from the balcony pond, you will also need to top it up. No additional nutrients or fertilizers are necessary. Once you have created this oasis of tranquility, regular maintenance will make it a joy for a long time.
