The term "Art Deco" comes from the French phrase "arts decoratifs", or decorative arts. The Art Deco style emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, after the First World War, when interiors and objects often expressed a desire for luxury, order, and modernity. Glamorous materials, elegant lines, and an international taste for refinement helped make the style a favorite of the urban upper class.
What kind of style is Art Deco?

Furniture and decorative objects are often considered the clearest expression of Art Deco: precise forms, classical references, abstract motifs, and sleek lines appear in sculpture, fashion, jewelry, and interior design. Art Deco furniture often used rare and luxurious materials – rosewood, Macassar ebony, ivory, amboyna, amaranth, and marble. Many wooden pieces from the period were finished in black lacquer or upholstered in leather or suede.
Art Deco style as an expression of personality

Everyday objects can also belong to the Art Deco style, including the octagonal Bialetti Moka Express coffee maker, designed in 1933 and still widely recognized. That familiarity is part of the style's appeal. Home accessories with glossy surfaces, geometric animal patterns, figures, and glass vessels can make a room feel more polished, luxurious, and theatrical.
Wooden tables and wall coverings

In terms of color, Art Deco is often economical and controlled. Pastel tones can dominate the room and are frequently complemented by white. Gold, chrome, bronze, and stainless steel add dramatic metallic effects. Floors are usually simple, often black or white, and may be finished in marble or checkerboard tiles. Art Deco still feels modern because it combines luxury with clear geometry and leaves room for creative interpretation.
