Jerusalem-based industrial designer Sharon Sides created this unique chair design, inspired by the end grain of a tree trunk, for her final project at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design. The project explores the transfer of images from nature into designed objects. It also examines the interaction between control and freedom, asking when careful planning matters and when it is better to let a form develop more naturally.

Metal chairs with a wood-grain look
Sides acid-etches tree-grain patterns and annual rings onto metal surfaces, creating a visually striking illusion of wood and its textured grain. Early versions of the idea included only chairs, but the collection later expanded to stools and tables. The finished pieces express the history and beauty of nature while giving each object its own character.
