Types of Tents – Trekking Tents for First Camping Trips
Trekking tents have one thing in common: they usually have a geometric shape, which makes them more stable in bad weather. Traditional A-frame tents are relatively heavy and less wind-resistant than many modern types of tents. Still, their shape leaves plenty of room for improvisation during setup.
Dome Tents, Also Called Igloo Tents
One of the most common types of tents is the dome tent. It is popular because of its low weight, good stability and easy construction. A dome tent is perfect for couples, while a family would usually need several tents or a larger model. Weight varies depending on the material. Two poles cross diagonally, creating a secure structure.
Pop-up and Tunnel Tents
A pop-up tent is held together by several flexible ring-shaped poles. It can be unpacked and set up quickly and easily, even by camping beginners, which is where its second name comes from. Tunnel tents also belong to the lightweight-tent category. They are suitable for larger families and offer plenty of space. The tradeoff is that a pop-up tent is less stable than many trekking tents. Another disadvantage of these two types of tents is that, when packed, they can take up a lot of space.
Special Types of Tents for Outdoor Adventures
The special types of tents include traditional tepee-style tents. They are a reinterpretation of early tent forms and are less common today. Other tents are not necessarily meant for camping: event tents, also called party tents, are large open structures that can accommodate about 20 people. Inflatable tents are built from air-filled chambers. They are perfect for the beach as long as they are well anchored to the ground. A beach shelter is a small open tent that offers sun protection.
