A modern house was built inside an old farmhouse in Amares, Portugal. The architects at Topos Atelier de Arquitectura completed the project in 2008 and preserved the rustic character of the building. The new additions have simple forms and fit naturally into the old farm setting.

Transforming the old farmhouse into a modern house was a clear architectural task: the interior partitions were removed, and the living areas were created within the existing volume. A small wooden box was added to define and separate the kitchen.

Another box was placed in the courtyard to house the bedrooms. Raised a few feet above the ground and clad in corten steel panels, this volume recalls the traditional rural barns and farm buildings of the region. The designers’ goal was to preserve the warmth of the old farmhouse while integrating the new additions seamlessly into the existing architecture.
