
At first glance, it may look like an unusual group of metal bars. In reality, it is an important monument to Nelson Mandela with a powerful symbolic meaning. The new Nelson Mandela monument was created by South African artist Marco Cianfanelli to mark the 50th anniversary of Mandela’s arrest. It stands on the spot where the young freedom fighter was arrested on August 5, 1962. Because of his struggle against apartheid, Mandela spent 27 years in prison.

The monument consists of 50 vertical steel bars, recalling the arrest of the future president 50 years earlier. From the right viewpoint, at a distance of about 35 meters, the separate columns align to reveal Mandela’s face. The individual pieces come together as one image, symbolizing solidarity.
