The Austrialian Garden: A Botanical Garden as You’ve Never Seen Before

As if Australia did not already offer enough to see, Cranbourne, near Melbourne, has a remarkable botanic garden devoted entirely to the country’s native flora. It is called The Australian Garden, and the name is precise: the 25-hectare landscape celebrates Australian plants through a contemporary design language.

The garden sits within the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne and reflects a long-standing Australian interest in protecting and reinterpreting native vegetation. It is not a conventional botanical display, and the landscape architecture is a major part of the experience.

Designed by Taylor Cullity Lethlean with plants specialist Paul Thompson, the project follows a metaphorical journey of water through the Australian landscape, from the desert interior to the coastal fringe. Visitors are not simply told what to see; they are invited to move through the garden and build their own experience of place, water, plants and terrain.
