01/04/2014 – How can an exhibition space be created from the ruins of an abandoned factory? This is the question the Chinese studio O-office Architects answered in Shenzhen: from the abandoned Honghua dye factory, the studio created an art pavilion called Z Gallery in ID Town.
The concept begins with the decision to observe and preserve a building in ruins, respecting the history of the existing structure while keeping a measured distance from its original function.
Z Gallery is conceived as a series of seven metal boxes suspended within a concrete landscape, housing exhibition spaces, workshops, restaurants, and small meeting rooms.
Each box becomes a laboratory and exhibition space for the artist, a room where works can be researched, built, and shown within a post-industrial atmosphere.
