29/09/2017 – With this project, the Milan-based studio ifdesign by Franco Tagliabue and architect Ida Origgi won important awards, including selection among the Mies van der Rohe Award projects in 2017 and an honorable mention in the International section of the Biennale Internazionale di Architettura "Barbara Cappochin" in 2017.
We are talking about the project, Wiggly House, a detached house located in Ponte Lambro (CO), in a difficult setting dominated by the multi-storey buildings that surround it.
Starting from this condition of proximity, and in order to protect the home and reduce its openings to the outside, the project works with large and small terraces, both open and enclosed, bringing light into the interior in a more controlled way. The cladding follows the same principle. Canadian grey granite covers the building to emphasize this idea of protection, except on the walls corresponding to the terraces, which are finished in grey plaster. Large glazed walls are added in these areas. Thus, the building strives to open upward: the roof slopes curve restlessly in search of zenithal light, generating three light-filled spaces: the living room, the kitchen and the double bedroom. It is a sequence of sections whose changing gradients become one of the dynamic aspects of the building.
The interior focuses on the value of light. The pyramids are 5m high; the largest room is the living room, while the smaller lights are in the meditation room and the bedroom of the house.
“From a typological point of view, the project investigates new combinations linked to changes in the structure of the family and in the way domestic spaces are established and used, which seems to have changed radically in recent years.
The situations switch, and the combinations between the elements change the way the house works: what is represented by the strength of the client’s wishes clearly cannot provide a uniform answer to questions of space and use.
Our homes must be ready to implement several combinations over time. Near the entrance, a small room is designed to be flexible, serving as a professional studio, a game room or another room.”
